Jailbait & Blackbird

Two Scandalous and Most Alarming Love Stories

Jailbait by Deirdre O’Connor and Blackbird by David Harrower each provide the audience with a brave and revealing investigation of intimate human relationships, focusing our gaze most acutely on two very young women, Claire in Jailbait and Una in Blackbird, who become deeply involved with much older men. The conclusion of Jailbait may make us feel reassured, Claire having transformed what might have been a shameful and destructive experience into one that brings her into enlightened adulthood. But it is disturbingly unclear where Una winds up at the end of Blackbird. The second meeting of Una and Ray 15 years after their initial shocking liaison when Una was 12 and Ray 42 is no less astonishing and outrageous than their first encounter. This pair of “lovers” reassures us of nothing as, dazed and bewildered, we watch the lights dim out on Blackbird.
